Doctor Who | Bernard Lodge Titles | Modernization
For the last month and a half, I've been putting the majority of my animation time towards simulated slit-scan effects. Of course, after studying the method so closely is almost seemed insane not to create a rendition of my own. This is a continuation (or prequel I guess) of the Davison titles I made a few years ago for a modern audience. In each one of these modernizations, I have attempted to exaggerate the themes of the source title sequence, whilst also recreating the effects to modern standards.
Here I think I've done a really good job not only completing the aforementioned but also putting my own spin on an iconic sequence. Here's the technical stuff. I wanted to create these titles in 4K as I haven't really done a proper 4K opening yet for Doctor Who. However, that restricted the scope I had in mind almost instantly as I'd have to render double the amount of pixels per frame. I decided to keep render times to a minimum I'd remain entirely inside After Effects and not use any traditional 3D effects (I broke this rule later on). This did shut down my idea of using a 3D model for the TARDIS instead of a vector image but I realized this could be a good thing as a clean 3D model may take away the spooky atmosphere of the sequence that I'd been trying to create throughout the creation process.
I used Element 3D and a Turbulence Noise texture map to create all variants of the Slit-Scan you see in this project, cheers to the brilliant Adam Walker for throwing me some useful pointers to get round issues he'd had when creating his version. Links to that title sequence can be found here:

This project has gone through so many drafts and while I know there is more I can do to improve it, I'm ready to put it down and move on to something different. A sequence that has always fascinated me is the 2010 Smith variant and I'd love to give it a go!
